The applicant should also emphasize the three most important parameters, achieving which will make the applicant consider the program a success. The applicant should also have an indicative plan to ensure the project’s sustainability and impact.

Budget: Organizations are expected to propose the budget basis on their existing models without compromising on the larger objectives of the project.

Project Timeline: Initially 1 year. However, the foundation would like the applicant to provide an activity plan with a monthly timeline.

Criteria for Selection of Proposals:

  • Project timeline with major tasks and milestones.

Apply By: 13 Feb 2023

About the Organization

The SDC is the agency for international cooperation of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). Switzerland’s international cooperation strategy for the 2021–24 period has four strategic goals that address development challenges and build on Switzerland’s unique expertise: 1) creating decent local jobs; 2) addressing climate change; 3) reducing the causes of forced and irregular migration; and 4) promoting the rule of law. The funds that the SDC invests in scientific research count towards official development aid.

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) is the leading Swiss institution for the promotion of scientific research with an annual budget of approximately 1 billion Swiss Francs. On behalf of the federal government, it promotes basic research in all scientific disciplines. Every year it supports around 3300 projects. It offers a range of research funding schemes and has policies in place to adhere to the basic principles and missions as stated in the Federal Act on the Promotion of Research and Innovation.16 Each funding scheme has its own budget. In so doing, the SNSF seeks to implement the principle of fair competition: applications must always be evaluated in a competitive procedure through comparisons with similar applications.

About the Program

The SNSF and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) launch their second call for proposals for the Solution-oriented Research for Development (SOR4D) programme.

The SOR4D programme invites researchers and development actors from policy and practice to collaborate in transnational and transdisciplinary consortia and provide new insights and innovative approaches to reduce poverty and to implement the 2030 Agenda in developing countries.

The SOR4D programme is open to all disciplines from the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, health and life sciences. Proposals must explicitly aim at systemic solutions that simultaneously address several of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

A total budget of CHF 19 million is available for the SOR4D programme. The research phase will last three years, followed by an additional year for pilot testing and scaling out of initiatives to accelerate transformation. Projects will be selected in a two-stage process.

How to Apply

Pre-proposals must be submitted by 13 February 2023, 17:00 (Swiss local time) via the mySNF platform.

Grant Amount: 100000 USD

About the Organization

UNICEF’s Innovation Fund invests in early stage, open-source, emerging technology digital public goods with the potential to impact children on a global scale. It also provides product and technology assistance, support with business growth, access to a network of experts and partners to allow for scale and growth. Our ambition is to build successful digital solutions into Global Digital Public Goods, to ensure fair, equitable, and open access to these unique and new tools for human development on a global scale.

The UNICEF Innovation Fund is the first financial vehicle of its kind in the United Nations and enables UNICEF to learn from and to shape markets of emerging technology that exist at the intersection of $100 billion business markets and 1 billion persons’ needs.

Founded in 2016, the core motivation of the Innovation Fund is to identify “clusters” or portfolios of initiatives around emerging technology – so that UNICEF can both shape markets and also learn about and guide these technologies to benefit children. We invest in digital public goods that can impact the lives of vulnerable populations.

We find these solutions clustered around $100 billion industries in frontier technology spaces, such as: blockchain, drones, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, extended reality and others.

About the Grant

The UNICEF Venture Fund is looking to make up to US$100K in equity-free investments to provide early-stage (seed) funding to for-profit technology start-ups developing software solutions using frontier technologies for climate action. If your startup leverages frontier technology for climate analytics and forecasts, greener economies, climate and disaster risk mitigation, carbon offsetting or emission reduction, or youth engagement around climate action, we are looking for you. If your product is registered in one of UNICEF’s programme countries, is a working prototype, has demonstrated results, and is (or could be) open-source licensed, we encourage you to apply.

Eligibility

Projects are assessed by UNICEF Innovation Fund team and recommended for funding to the internal board. Companies need to fulfill the following mandatory requirements to be considered for funding:

  • Registered as a private company
  • Registered in a UNICEF programme country (see list here)
  • Working on open source technology solutions (or willing to be open source) under the following licenses or their equivalent:
  • for software, a BSD license,
  • for hardware, a CERN license and
  • a CC-BY license for design or content, a CC-BY license
  • An existing prototype of the open source solution with promising results from initial pilots
  • Solution has the potential to positively impact the lives of the most vulnerable children
  • Generating publicly exposed real-time data that is measurable

How to Apply

Step I: Check Eligibility

Interested companies are required to check the eligibility of the Innovation Fund

Step II: Submit Application

Interested companies are required to submit an online application through the Fund website. You should provide the information and supporting documents indicated in the form.

Applying to the Fund does not automatically ensure that the submitting company will be selected to participate in next stages of the application process.

Step III: Submit Request for Proposal

The Innovation Fund reviews all applications and notifies companies of the decision. Shortlisted applicants are invited to submit a detailed proposal, this is called the Request for Proposal (RFP) step.

Step IV: Demo Interview

After a careful review, companies shortlisted at the RFP step are invested for an online demo interview. This is usually a 30 min interview the with Innovation Fund team and experts from our tech teams.

Step V: Final Result

Based on a complete assessment of the application, RFP and interview, the Innovation Fund makes the final investment decision and notifies all selected companies.

Grant Amount: 94000 USD

About the Organization:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives. The majority of NIH facilities are located in Bethesda, Maryland and other nearby suburbs of the Washington metropolitan area, with other primary facilities in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and smaller satellite facilities located around the United States. The NIH conducts its own scientific research through its Intramural Research Program (IRP) and provides major biomedical research funding to non-NIH research facilities through its Extramural Research Program.

Infrastructure Development Training Programs for Critical HIV Research at Low-and Middle-Income Country Institutions

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced the applications for Infrastructure Development Training Programs for Critical HIV Research at LMICs Institutions. The overall goal of the Fogarty HIV Research Training (HIVRT) Program is to strengthen the scientific capacity of institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to conduct HIV research related to the evolving HIV epidemic in their country.

This FOA provides opportunities for a U.S. or LMIC institution to collaborate with their partners to fill gaps in a particular research infrastructure function that will strengthen the HIV research capacity at the proposed LMIC institution by training LMIC scientists and staff at the LMIC institution(s) to support those functions. The resulting strengthened infrastructure should allow these institutions to be more responsive to research needs at the institution(s) and enhance their capacity to obtain funds from and collaborate with the NIH, U.S. Government, other donors, and LMICs in their HIV/AIDS efforts.
